CUTTY SARK
Sympathetic to the client’s brief for this project, including their planting and materials preferences, a garden was born suffusing a Mediterranean theme, marrying colours and textures of existing elements with newly built structures.
Time worn and characterful perimeter brick walls were retained. These sit in juxtaposition to raised concrete planters, contemporary coppered oak millboard decking and two types of stylish patterned porcelain pavers; Aparici’s Altea Elda and Jura porcelain, to help inject that Mediterranean style.
Although the garden areas in the new design have been redefined, the intention was to work with the existing land gradient to create a lower and upper terrace. The lower terrace was conceived for dining and the upper for relaxing, incorporating a bespoke bench with inbuilt storage and recliner chairs.
A Mediterranean planting theme was chosen for variation in height and shape and to provide contrast and multi seasonal interest. Ease of maintenance was also a consideration. Mediterranean fan palms, pines, rosemary, sedum, salvias, alliums and daisies all add an alure to the senses, complementing the colourful patterned tiles and rich tones of the perimeter walls, thus forming a cohesive design.
After sunset, subtle and creative lighting extends the enjoyment into the evening, magically highlighting the architectural and focal features of this exquisite garden.
